Custom Stone & Paver Patios
We create beautiful outdoor living spaces that transform your backyard into a place you'll love spending time.

Why Custom Patios Work So Well in Alaska
Alaska's summers are magical. Long daylight hours and comfortable temperatures make you want to spend every moment outside. A well-designed patio extends your living space and helps you make the most of those precious warm months. Instead of looking at your backyard through a window, you can actually use it for dining, entertaining, or just relaxing with a good book.
Stone and paver patios perform exceptionally well in our climate. Unlike wood decks that rot from moisture or concrete that cracks from freeze-thaw cycles, properly installed pavers handle Alaska's weather beautifully. The individual units can shift slightly with ground movement without cracking. Water drains between pavers instead of pooling on the surface. If you ever need to access utilities under your patio, individual pavers can be removed and replaced without damaging the entire surface.
We've designed and installed patios throughout Anchorage, Eagle River, and the surrounding areas. Each project is unique because every yard presents different opportunities. Maybe you have a beautiful view you want to take advantage of. Perhaps you need a level area for outdoor furniture on a sloped property. Or you might want to create distinct zones for cooking, dining, and lounging. Custom design means your patio works perfectly for your specific needs and lifestyle.
The right patio also increases your property value significantly. Outdoor living spaces are highly desirable features for buyers. They see a finished patio as ready-to-use outdoor space rather than a project they'll need to tackle. Quality materials and professional installation mean your patio remains an asset for decades, not something that needs replacing in a few years.
Choosing Materials for Your Patio
The materials you choose determine how your patio looks, feels, and performs. We work with several options, each offering distinct advantages.
Natural Stone Patios
Natural stone creates stunning, one-of-a-kind patios that blend seamlessly with Alaska's landscape. Flagstone, slate, and bluestone are popular choices. Each stone has unique colors, textures, and patterns. No two natural stone patios look exactly alike. Stone feels substantial underfoot and develops a beautiful patina over time. It stays relatively cool in direct sun and handles our temperature extremes without deteriorating. Natural stone is the premium choice for homeowners who want something truly special.
Concrete Pavers
Concrete pavers offer incredible versatility at a more accessible price point. Modern manufacturing produces pavers in countless colors, shapes, and textures. You can find options that mimic natural stone, create geometric patterns, or make bold contemporary statements. Pavers are precisely manufactured for consistent sizing, making installation faster and creating tight, uniform joints. They're also engineered specifically for freeze-thaw resistance, so they perform reliably in our climate.
Brick Pavers
Brick pavers deliver classic, timeless appeal. Their warm earth tones complement almost any home style. Brick is extremely durable when properly installed and can last 50 years or more. The units are small enough to create intricate patterns like herringbone, basket weave, or running bond. Brick patios have a traditional elegance that never goes out of style.
Mixed Material Designs
Sometimes the best design combines different materials. Natural stone might create a focal area or border while pavers fill the main field. Brick edging can frame a paver patio. These combinations add visual interest and can help manage project budgets by using premium materials strategically.
How We Design Your Custom Patio
Great patios don't happen by accident. They require thoughtful design that considers how you'll actually use the space.
We start every project with a site visit and consultation. We look at your yard's layout, sun exposure, drainage patterns, and existing features. We discuss how you want to use your patio. Do you need space for a dining table and six chairs? Are you planning to add a grill or outdoor kitchen? Do you want separate areas for different activities? Understanding your goals helps us design a patio that truly works for you.
Next, we consider practical factors like access routes, utility locations, and property slopes. We evaluate how water flows across your property and design drainage to keep your patio dry and prevent erosion. If your yard slopes, we might recommend incorporating retaining walls or steps to create level areas. These functional elements get integrated into the overall design so they enhance rather than detract from the finished look.
Then we work on the aesthetic design. We show you material samples, discuss layout options, and create plans that match your home's style. Your patio should feel like a natural extension of your house, not an afterthought. We pay attention to details like the direction pavers are laid, pattern choices, border treatments, and how the patio connects to your home and landscape.
Once you approve the design, we provide detailed estimates breaking down materials and labor. You know exactly what to expect before work begins. This thorough planning process ensures your finished patio exceeds expectations.
Our Installation Process
Professional installation makes the difference between a patio that lasts decades and one that fails within a few years. Here's how we build patios that perform beautifully in Alaska's demanding climate.
- Excavation and grading: We dig out the patio area to proper depth, typically 8 to 12 inches. We grade the base to ensure water drains away from your home and doesn't pool on the patio surface.
- Base preparation: A compacted gravel base is essential for Alaska patios. We install several inches of crushed stone and compact it in layers. This provides stable support and excellent drainage.
- Edge restraints: We install edge restraints to keep pavers from shifting over time. These borders maintain your patio's shape and prevent the edges from creeping outward.
- Bedding layer: A smooth layer of sand provides the final leveling surface. We screed this perfectly flat so pavers sit at consistent height.
- Paver installation: We carefully place each paver according to the design pattern. Proper spacing and alignment create tight, uniform joints. Cut edges are placed strategically to maintain visual appeal.
- Joint filling and compaction: Fine sand gets swept into joints between pavers. We compact the entire surface to set everything firmly in place. Additional sand fills any remaining gaps.
The entire process typically takes one to two weeks depending on patio size and complexity. We clean up thoroughly each day and protect finished work from weather and foot traffic. When we're done, you have a beautiful, fully functional outdoor space ready to enjoy. Our professional masonry work ensures your patio performs as well as it looks.
